Paul Churchward has passed away. Our member Pablo

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 2:30 PM

Hi All

It is with regret that I have to advise you of the passing away of one our members Paul Churchward. Pablo rinkhockey member

Paul had been very active in the game some years ago and was a gold medal winner in the National Championships in the Junior Division held in Wellington Winter show buildings in 1976, and continued on to play for a few more years after with both Craig & Mark Cummings Grant Davies and of course the Campbell brothers Jaime John & Paul.He then shifted to Sydney to live and returned to NZ last year, and I was one of the first persons he contacted upon his return, naturally enquiring about the game of Roller Hockey.

I invited him to come down to training on our usual wednesday evenings and after coming once for a look he could not resist to become actively involved again which he did, his last tourament being in Wellington in august scoring 6 goals for Wellington 2

I have been advised that one of his last requests that his skates and stick and the posters he had made for this year nationals were taken to Mary Potter hopsice and he died peacefully being surrounded by these.

I shall send tomorrow a card to his wife and family expressing our sad loss on behalf of all our members.

Regards

Peter Braddock President RHNZ

I always thought Paul and I would again get to play in another tournament together, Masters or Vet's!
I'm playing Inline Hockey so should still have a few skills to get me through!
Many many memories of tournaments all around NZ, Pauls cackle and his gentlemanly sporting manner.
He was friendly with all the clubs and players and I admired him for this, and he also had a great respect for the elders of the game. I can just see him greeting Mr Mackie, (Donalds dad), and Ian grinning slightly with his response (Hello Paul), we were all supposed to be a little scared, but not Paul!
That was Pauls unique nature, he embraced everyone, never had a ill word of anyone, and this resonated to others.
A great mate, a true friend, and a bloody good human being, I wish their were more like him!
Til we play again - keep smilin...

Im Paul's daughter.
Dad LOVED Roller Hockey! It was one of his many loves but i know he truly enjoyed it; the training, touring, games - all of it!
One day before I was about to watch him play a game I asked him "So are you any good" and he told me he merely just made up numbers for the team. Nevertheless he scored the first goal and played great!
Thank you to everyone who played with and against him.

When I heard this news, i couldnt believe it, "that little smiley guy from wellington", I have only played him a few times but I can say he was kind; not too rough on the girls on the opposite team and always a smile on his face.
My thoughts are with his family and friends...kia kaha xx

Having only met Paul at Hockey tournaments in the last two years, it was never enough time to get to know really well. What i learned was that he allways had a smile and was happy to talk to anyone who took the time to say hello. Truly a nice guy. He will be missed by many. On behalf of Wanganui Roller Hockey i offer our condolences to the Churchward family and the Wellington club in this time of loss.

Paul, It feels like yesterday we wore the yellow and black. Always getting you out of bed so as to get to where we were going on time. We travelled a lot while you slept and always drank our share, We all played hard and you more by playing very fair.

Looks like you beat us to this one. We will get there one day now knowing you'll be waiting with a smile.

Well Paul, i was looking for you at the tournament and now know why your were not there. I find it so hard to comprehend as i remember laughing with you at the last Tournament went your team was knacked after playing out Juniors. A couple of V drinks and you were ready to do battle with them again in the final. a few words about us all getting a bit older and those dam kids running us all ragged on the rink seemed to hit home to most of us. I will miss your smiling face and just the fact that you were one of the good guys and always stopped to say hello . To all Your Family and the Wellington Players and those that knew You Paul My Sincere Condolences. You Left The game at half time and i wish we could sub you back on again . You will not be forgotten and one day we will all have a few beers and play again.

To Pauls Family and the wellington roller skating club our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.
I played againt Paul only a handful of times , he was a true sportman and gave it 100% he was a lovely man soft spoken and always had a smile and a handshake at the end of a game whatever the score.
He will be truly missed amongst our skating family.
